BUILDING 21st CENTURY SKILLS THROUGH PLAY – SATURDAY 24th AUGUST 2019

Hosted at Our Lady of Fatima, DURBAN NORTH

The guest speaker, Jane Jarvis, did not disappoint.

What a wealth of knowledge and inspiration for everyone who attended.

The Makabongwe team agreed we could have listened to her all day.

Jane encouraged us all to go back to the basics and PLAY, PLAY, PLAY

We also need to bust these three myths:-

  1. There is not enough time to play
  2. Children go to school to work, not play
  3. We’ll play when our work is finished – if there’s time

This was the essence of the morning:-

Harder work, more worksheets and academics introduced in preschool are NOT the answer!

The solution is RE-IMAGINING how we teach and putting PLAY AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR THINKING

Quote from the LEGO FOUNDATION:-

“Building a future in which learning through play empowers children to become creative, engaged, lifelong learners.

The organisers very graciously made the notes available to all who attended and each Makabongwe teacher and assistant has their own set to refer to, be encouraged and inspired.

We want to be part of the SOLUTION for ALL the learners who come to our school.

We are committed to BUILDING 21st CENTURY SKILLS THROUGH PLAY.

  1. Play for children is like work for adults. It is the childs way of learning. They learn more words through play than they do through worksheets. This sounds like a very important lesson for everyone who attended.
