On the 18th July 2013 – Mandela’s Birthday – we hosted our first ever Sports Day at Makabongwe.
It was a tremendous success and so we decided to add this event to our school calendar.
Unfortunately we did not have a decent place for the children to do their races but this did NOT dampen our enthusiasm. We forged ahead in 2014, 2015 and 2016 with a Sports Day.
Permoseal – manufacturers of Alcolin and Bostik adhesives – have always helped facilitate and sponsored the day with great energy and passion.
In 2017, Glenwood Boys High School invited us to their school for a special sports day. What a treat and what fun.
THEN…….in September 2016, Belgotex donated very durable and tough artificial grass and this changed the face of our playground for many years to come.
WHAT A PLEASURE for the children to run their races on “grass” and for the teachers not to be stressing about grazed knees, elbows and wiping away tears!!
It was another glorious DURBAN winter day – not too hot, not too cold.
There was an obvious buzz of excitement as the children changed into their red t-shirts and black shorts ready to participate in the events planned for each class.
About 40 parents attended as well as members of the Executive committee and other “friends” to Makabongwe including Kathy and her team from Permoseal.
It was evident that EVERYONE was enjoying themselves :– the children, the spectators, the teachers and our 2 VIP guests – Aunty Liz Ross, one of the founder members of Makabongwe and our previous Principal of 11 years, Mrs Shirley Yell.
We had potato and spoon races – with a difference – (it’s a lot easier if you hold the potato in place), a variety of bean bag balancing races, sack races but in pillow slips, relays and hula hoop games.
Every child in each class got to participate in 3 events. The parents were competitive and keen to show off their sporting skills and as for the teachers – WOW what competition and fun.
Grade R YELLOW BIRDS – Ms Mdabe won the Best Spirit of the Day trophy decided by Aunty Liz and Mrs Yell.
Each child enjoyed a water and energade sachet as well as energy biscuits and chips – left overs from Comrades and donated by Radio Pulpit.
The medals were delightful sunny faces with coloured ribbon representing the class – Green, Blue, red and Yellow – donated by Permoseal.
HAPPY children, HAPPY teachers, HAPPY parents – another HAPPY day at Makabongwe
