There are 3 main reasons we celebrate Heritage Day in South Africa – pride, gratitude and awareness.
We are a nation made up of many different cultures.
We celebrate this day to unite our diversity.
We need to be grateful for the many freedom fighters who fought for our constitutional rights.
Social change starts with the transformation of racist and discriminatory mentalities through education about these issues.
At Makabongwe we want to be active effectors of change.
We celebrated Heritage Day by dressing up, enjoying a rainbow cake, waving and learning about the flags of the countries our children represent, dancing and moving as one to the music of different countries and respecting and appreciating what makes us who we are.
It was a happy, colourful celebration and I pray that the unity enjoyed today by the educators and children will continue and be passed on from one generation to the next.
